What is the OPEN Method?

I studied public relations at NYU and it was definitely a good education. But what I learned in textbooks and lectures didn’t get me very far when I landed my first client.

My clients didn’t care about all my scholarly knowledge. They just wanted their business in the media.

To do this, I needed practical knowledge.

I needed something for the real world.

I needed a step-by-step strategy.

The first thing I did was simply try. I watched what worked and what didn’t, and after years of trial and error, I realized I had developed the strategy I needed all along. I call it the OPEN Method.

What is the OPEN Method?

The OPEN Method is a strategy to get media placements. It consists of four steps and is taught so that anyone, from the DIY small business owner to the PR pro can pick it up and put it to use.

Who is the OPEN Method for?

Anyone who wants to see their brand on local TV, in magazines, newspapers, online publications, blogs, podcasts, and more can use the OPEN Method.

More specifically, small business owners and PR professionals have the most to gain from using the OPEN Method.

Small businesses can use the OPEN Method to take PR into their own hands. In a lot of cases, the only thing standing in the way of them getting into a major publication is someone reaching out. If they aren’t in a place to outsource to a PR firm, the OPEN Method gives them a systematic way to approach PR.

I’ve also taught the OPEN Method to PR teams and private companies. PR is a big and evolving field, so there’s always something new to learn.

Why should I learn the OPEN Method?

Small business owners can majorly benefit from knowing the OPEN Method. Getting featured in the media boosts your brand, exposes new audiences to you, and increases your credibility.

The OPEN Method is a way for small businesses to get a simple, affordable, and effective PR strategy for their brand.

And if you’re a PR pro wanting to get more media placements for your clients, it is totally appropriate to learn a new strategy to improve your skills

Is the OPEN Method difficult or time consuming?

No and no.

Learning how to contact the media is not rocket science but there is a certain finesse to it. You need to know what the media wants, when to send it, who wants to receive it, and how to keep going.

Think of it like an information download from me to you. Once you know the framework, you’ll be able to reach out to the media with ease.

You can learn the OPEN Method in about an hour. I organized all the information you need to be super concise. So, expect to-the-point information you can put to use right away.

Once you complete the course, you should schedule about an hour per week to keep up with PR. It’s a marathon, not a sprint so if you want to see results, you should consistently put in a small amount of time.

How do I learn the OPEN Method?

The OPEN Method is explained in detail in my Foundations course. All of the information is online and self-paced. All-in-all, it’s only around an hour long, so you can get all the information you need in a short amount of time. For more information, click here.
